It’s third quarter for many schools in Maryland.  Ultimately, both teachers and students are pushing forward to the end of the school year.  We have devised a plan to assist you in your efforts as a parent, to accelerate your child’s learning. The Sensory Station is happy to share the Director of Curriculum’s third quarter tips.  That’s right, our 5 best tips to end the school year… confident and strong!

A Guide to Third Quarter Learning

1.Find a location in your home that is well lit and quiet.  Make sure the area is free of toys and distractions, your future leader will need to focus.  This study space should be separate for each sibling and free of electronic devices. If your child must access their work through computer, have them write or print out the assignment prior to entering their study location.

2.Use your time wisely.  Write a daily schedule for afterschool and leading up to bedtime.  Each day is different, therefore should be thought and written independently.  Keep this new schedule as a routine for your child. A routine clock or poster can be made as a reminder and viewed daily.

3.Learning materials are important.  Prepare crayons, pencils, sharpeners, and notebooks for the completion of homework each day.  This will prevent “unnecessary” trips around the house for supplies. The focus will remain on independent work and completing after school tasks.

4.Healthy afterschool meals are key.  Give your child a boost with a snack that will charge the brain.  Between rushing out to school and lunchtime chats, children rarely have enough time to eat during the day.  Homework requires brain power. Afterschool meals are helpful to your child’s end of day learning. Limit sugar and offer plenty of water.

5.Early confidence comes from knowing parents care and are aware.  Daily after school chats, remind your child of the value placed on learning in your home. Hold discussions regarding schoolwork, homework packets, and test.  If you expect your child to do their best, they will. No matter the age… a healthy commitment to learning is key.
