Parents who read with their children, have the power to create incredible thinkers.  Follow these simple steps to begin…

1. Listening to a parent or sibling creates a fun way to practice phonemes.  Practice speech sounds while discussing your day. Also, sing songs and read poetry to hear the rhythm words create.

2. Emphasize the difference that each letter creates while reading.  Attempt to decode words by breaking them into individual sounds and syllables.  Clap your hands to expand multi syllable words.

3. Strengthen knowledge of vocabulary within text.  Keep a children’s dictionary near to define new words in books.  Ask your child what they believe the word means within the context of the sentence.

4. During or after reading a book, discuss the story in detail asking who, what, when, where and why questions.  Remember to turn this into a conversation. Ask the five W’s throughout the text or one on each page.

Attending to these four steps daily, will foster a reader who is confident and enjoys expressing what they know.  Have Fun!!!
